You know how I love to talk about embracing our flaws and using that self-acceptance and humor to help build resilience. Well, today I got to talk about all that and more with my friends at the Wisdom Coalition.

I’ve known co-hosts Nancy Werteen and Kim Howie since my days at SHE! They wrote several terrific features for the magazine and I loved their approach to and passion for helping people find more joy in every day. Poor SHE! got shelved, but Nancy, Kim and I have stayed in touch and recently Nancy dropped me a note to say how much she likes my tagline and YouTube show, Flaws are the New Black. That lead to a few funny and flawed notes back and forth between us, and ultimately to my being interviewed on today’s podcast.

I think you’ll laugh, so I hope you listen. And then I hope you listen to the other interviews they’ve done; they are all so energizing and inspiring that I hope you’ll be inspired to subscribe to their weekly “Well of Wisdom” podcast.

Thanks Nancy and Kim and to all of you, too!

Susan

PS Thanks so very much to all of you who watched and shared my first TEDx Talk. I appreciate it and all of your beautiful notes so very much.

PPS Boy, I DO love to talk. But I have a lot to tell you! With Flaws are the New Black growing in popularity, I’m putting together a sassy, stylish line of home and fashion accessories that celebrate our perfect imperfection. Below is just one item in the line. I’d love your thoughts!

Flaws are the New Black mug. Savor your perfect imperfection.

We celebrate the big stuff.

We land the big client, get to the 5am exercise class four-months straight, finish the project ahead of schedule so we celebrate. Of course we should!

But on the way to those things there are other things that transpire; mini milestones that we hit and when we hit them, we should celebrate. Celebrating those mini celebrations keep us pumped and energized to keep going for the big win.

How you choose to celebrate the small win is up to you:

Text a friend, call your parents, high five your spouse. Keep a little success journal, write it down. Then you can look back on it later and see your road map to your success. Practice gratitude, take a walk, take a break.

It’s your call how you recognize the mini wins but do it. Celebrate the small stuff.

So maybe you’re writing a new book, you’ve launched a new product, you just left your job to start your own business. Maybe you just bought a fixer-upper that you’re starting to work on. Whatever it is, you’ve got to take it at your own pace (and for Pete’s sake, don’t aim for perfection!).

It’s never a good idea to measure ourselves against others who are pursuing a similar project or endeavor and who might be a bit further down the road than we are.

Why?

Because when we do that, we feel insecure, we feel like we’re not keeping up or we’re not as good as, and we start doubting our talents and abilities.

That’s a recipe for disaster.

Whatever you’re pursuing, learn from the roadblocks you encounter, learn from (but don’t measure yourself against) the folks ahead of you on the path, share your knowledge with those starting out, and most importantly, take it all at your own pace.

Happy New Year Friends and Family,

I’m thrilled to tell you that my first ever TEDx Talk is up and on YouTube. I hope you enjoy it and I hope you’ll feel free to share it with all those who could benefit from my message.

I am also thrilled because in honor of my talk, my website has been completely redone to highlight my speaking endeavors and it looks beautiful! Thank you, Michelle Coe for your tremendous talent and guidance.

In a few weeks, my talk, “Make Peace with Your Grief and Watch Where It Leads You,” will be available as a gift book. Think of it as a beautiful, tiny tome that says what none of know how to say when there’s nothing to say. Copies will be available for purchase on my site.

More to come. Thank you for your patience. Now, please, go check out my first ever TEDx Talk!

Susan

What do I mean by nothing?

Walk away from the project or situation that has you banging your head against the wall and do something completely different. Read a book, take a walk, call a friend, meditate. Do nothing that relates to the situation or task at hand.

A million years ago I had a presentation due and I didn’t have word one on the thing. It was 2pm; I’d promised a first draft by 5. I was practically crying when my husband suggested I go for a walk. I thought he was crazy. Yeah, crazy like a fox.

I went for a walk and wasn’t gone five minutes when suddenly I could see the entire thing: how it was supposed to look and feel, and what it needed to say.

I’ve sworn by this approach ever since. Give it a try.

Do nothing. Clarify everything.

Now and for the foreseeable future, no more playing small. Instead, we’re going to embrace Marianne Williamson’s words:

“Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our greatest fear is that we are powerful beyond all measure.”

Let’s decide right now not to be afraid of being powerful beyond all measure. Let’s decide to embrace our power and our brilliance, and let’s think of it as “we’re doing it for the kids.” Seriously. Setting the example for your own kids, setting the example for the people you work with, the young people climbing up that ladder.

Embrace your power and your brilliance. Own It. Shine your light. Let others see it’s okay to do that. Be your powerful, brilliant, best, every single day because playing small, people, is canceled.

Recently I heard the expression, “They want to fly first class. I want to own the plane.” and it caught my attention.

Because it’s so far beyond how I usually think. I’m a huge cheerleader; I encourage others and I think I encourage myself and yet – it never crossed my mind to think that big.

So, I’ve made a promise to myself; from now on I’m living by two schools of thought – the “own the plane” business and my old favorite, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”’

I’m shooting past what I want and I’m going to see where I land. How about you?

You are the only one who can limit your greatness.

How do I know this to be true?

Because when my eldest was diagnosed with autism, we were told he’d never live on his own, never hold a job, never drive, and never manage his own money. Guess what?

Those doctors were wrong.

Today my son enjoys the independence all parents want for their kids – and it’s because neither we nor he let anyone or any opinion limit how far he could go.

Do you remember the song “Soak Up the Sun” by Sheryl Crow? She sang those lines, “It’s not having what you want. It’s wanting what you’ve got,” and they stopped me cold on the street on my way to work.

I was so saddened and depressed by the job I was going to. It was making me miserable. The truth is though, I let it make me miserable. It took me ages to change my perspective on the situation and feel gratitude for the fact that my job kept a roof over our heads and food in the fridge. But, once my mindset changed, (thanks for the push, Sheryl!) everything changed for the better.

It’s not having what you want. It’s wanting what you already have and practicing active gratitude for those things in your life. When we do that, we have more to be thankful for.

“When you doubt your power, you give power to your doubts.” Think about that. It’s brilliant! I wish I’d come up with it.

When we doubt our power, when we doubt the thing we know we’re great at, when we doubt what we know is the reason God put us on this planet, when we doubt all of that, we fill ourselves with nothing but negative energy. The result? We go straight down the doubt rabbit hole.

Now my late husband, Stu, had a terrific technique for luring me out of my doubt rabbit hole. He’d…..
