Do you remember the song “Soak Up the Sun” by Sheryl Crow? She sang those lines, “It’s not having what you want. It’s wanting what you’ve got,” and they stopped me cold on the street on my way to work.

I was so saddened and depressed by the job I was going to. It was making me miserable. The truth is though, I let it make me miserable. It took me ages to change my perspective on the situation and feel gratitude for the fact that my job kept a roof over our heads and food in the fridge. But, once my mindset changed, (thanks for the push, Sheryl!) everything changed for the better.

It’s not having what you want. It’s wanting what you already have and practicing active gratitude for those things in your life. When we do that, we have more to be thankful for.
